This one-of-a-kind ikat and hand-embroidered pillow cover from Armughon Handicrafts come direct to you from impoverished artisans in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, the heart of the Central Asian Silk Road. Made from colorful silk and cotton ikat fabric hand-woven in the ancient method, with dramatic traditional suzani embroidery patterns that reflect the historic art and culture of Tajikistan, this pillow cover will add that “wow” factor to your home decor. Armughon Handicrafts is the handicrafts arm of the Zerafshan Tourism Development Association (ZTDA) in Panjakent, Tajikistan, just across the border from Samarkand. (“Armughon” means “gift, a reminder of a place” in Tajik.) ZTDA works to preserve, nurture and develop local textile art traditions, while also empowering women living in the Panjakenti rural areas by involving them in the local economy. ZTDA designer Munira Akilova creates products for the modern home that incorporate traditional suzani (embroidery) and quroq (patchwork) techniques and patterns. As she explains, “Each piece has its own meaning, [and] a part of Zerafshan.” Several of her designs have received the UNESCO Award of Excellence for Craft.
