Report an abuse for product Large Vintage Tribal Ring- Afghanistan Lapis Lazuli Antelope, Size 13.5-14, Item JE9
This ring will certainly make a statement! The blue stone in the center is lapis lazuli. It has been hand carved with an antelope and rubbed to make it stand out. The stone is unpolished. It sits on a large, hollow silver casing. The side of the ring is heavily decorated with silver work. There are two pieces of glass mounted to each side, one round orange-red piece and one light green-blue teardrop shape.
This ring is very large and If you like large, chunky rings, this will certainly become a favorite! The diameter on the ring opening is about 23 mm, making the size of this ring between a 13.5 and 14.
The ring does show signs of wear and we are guessing that it is from the 1960’s. But, who really knows? It comes from Ghazni, Afghanistan, one of the central Pashtun provinces well known for its silver work and other crafts. This was probably a man’s ring, but anyone who loves it could wear it nowadays!
The Pashtun are the largest ethnic majority of Afghanistan and this is one of their jewelry samples. Like their needlework, they are drawn to organic shapes that reflect nature. Islam forbids using animal or people in their designs, one more sign that this was probably made by a tribal group in a remote area. The Kuchi, for example, sometimes incorporate animal motifs in their pieces. As nomads, they have often lived outside the norms of educated urban Muslims.
Estimated age: 50-75 years
