This is a reclaimed textile piece from Afghanistan. It was yoke of a dress. Traditional Pashtun (the largest ethnic minority group of Afghanistan) have a yoke under the neckline from which gathered, long panels of fabric flow. Sleeves are normally wide, and they wear matching cuffed pants underneath. The garments are decorated with embroidery at the yoke, the collar, the bottom of the sleeves and the cuff of the pants. When a garment wears out, they remove the embroidered areas and re-use them in a new piece, so several generations might share some of the original outfit.

Dimensions:

13.5″ wide x 17″ long (34 cm x 43 cm)
Band width: 23″ (58.5 cm)
Shoulder: 4″ wide (10 cm)

This yoke is decorated heavily with silver metallic thread. It looks wonderfully rich and is in great shape! Shisha mirrors, considered a protective element, are embroidered into the design.

The front fabric is a knit synthetic fabric. The backing fabric is pieced cotton. The last two photos show the back.

Estimated age is at 40 years or more. Evidence of machine stitching indicates that it is probably from the 1970’s. Wear is a part of its history. The remnant can be gently hand washed and pressed before use. Incorporate into other projects that need a focal point. It would also look great framed as a piece with ethnographic interest.

Folkwear sells historical and ethnic patterns and they have a dress pattern from Afghanistan that would work well with this yoke: http://folkwear.com/107.html
