Specifics on this piece: This wallet is from Afghanistan, made by the Pashtun Tribe, the largest ethnic minority of the country. Embroidered with metallic threads, the piece is decorated with glass seed beads along the edges and on the inside. There are two pockets on the inside which would be used to hold jewelry or money. It appears to have been completely hand stitched. I see no evidence of machine sewing. It is in very good condition. Background color is dark red, with mostly orange and red top stitching accented by green and purple and cream top stitching.

Dimensions:

10″ x 5.25″
Metric: 25 cm x 13 cm

Measurements are for the wallet when it is open.

Estimated age: 1950’s

Afghanistan has been at the heart of the crossroads for the Silk Road for centuries. Nomads and generations of ethnic groups have thrived on trade and beautiful handicraft skills. Textiles, embroidery and carpet weaving continue to represent a plethora of skills that extend on into metal work, wood work, and ceramics. Designs reflect both the beauty of nature and life of spirit in choice of colors and fluidity of the design.
