Nuristan, “Land of Light”, is a province in the mountainous region of NorthEastern Afghanistan. Kohistan is on the other side of the border in Pakistan. Both share a common a history and have similar garments.

This baby’s vest is traditional to the dress in the region: tiny cross stitch designs accented with white beads against black cotton fabric. Nuristan is thought to have been crossed by Alexander the Great. As there are many blondes in the area, they are considered to be his direct descendents. You can read more about them on Wikipedia:

This site has some images of a woman’s outfit in the same style:

It is interesting to me that the Kuchi, who live in more desert areas, have bright, eye-catching clothing, while the mountain people, also highly decorated, go for a more subdued, earthy palette. Perhaps you want to be seen in the desert, concealed in the forest? At any rate, this little vest, baby size, is a beautiful piece! The stitches are tiny and even. It’s in very good shape.
