The fabulous red-eyed cicada, portrayed in an art quilt
I wanted to depict the fantastic red eyes of the cicada, and also indicate in a visual way the loud sound that it makes. I live in an area that experiences major brood events, such as the 17 year cycle, when millions of the insect emerge from the ground, make a lot of noise, mate, and die. The title references the incredibly loud call they make.
The background fabric is a commercial print, and the pattern seems to almost vibrate visually. The wings are made of stitched organza, and extend fully – they are folded underneath in this view.

Fiber art for the wall, decorative objects, and fiber art jewelry. Most pieces are made with my signature “thread sculpture” technique, because fiber art is unique!
