Report an abuse for product Red Kuchi Dress Yoke, Vintage Insert #21
This is a reclaimed textile piece from Afghanistan. It was part of a dress. Traditional Pashtun (the largest ethnic minority group of Afghanistan) have a yoke under the neckline from which gathered, long panels of fabric flow. Sleeves are normally wide, and they wear matching cuffed pants underneath. The Kuchi are part of the larger Pashtun tribe. The garments are decorated with embroidery at the yoke, the collar, the bottom of the sleeves and the cuff of the pants. When a garment wears out, they remove the embroidered areas and re-use them in a new piece, so several generations might share some of the original outfit.
This yoke has red cotton fabric as a base that has been heavily embroidered. Blue velvet on either side shows the original body of the dress. Silver threads have been sewn into patterns at the bottom following through to the back.
Dimensions: 12″ wide (below neckline) x 11″ long
Metric: 30.5 x 28 cm
Estimated age: 1950’s. The piece appears to be completely hand stitched. Wear is a part of its history. The remnant can be gently hand washed and pressed before use. Incorporate into other projects that need a focal point. It would also look great on a small stand (decorative candle holders might work) as a piece with ethnographic interest.
Folkwear sells historical and ethnic patterns and they have a dress pattern from Afghanistan that would work well with this yoke: http://folkwear.com/107.html
