Vintage Child’s Vest, Afghanistan- Ceremonial Turkman, #12

Afghan Tribal Arts has been importing from Afghanistan and the region since the 1980’s. The focus is on vintage textiles and tribal jewelry as well as new gemstone beads made for jewelry designers. Clicking on the Shop on Etsy button will take you to our shop there where you can see what is currently in stock.

This piece is a variation on a traditional ceremonial vest a child would wear. The metal (base) pieces are stamped and cut out, all completely done by hand and are considered to be protective against the evil eye. Front and back are heavily adorned. Beaded elements add quite a bit of weight to the piece, along with the cowrie shells.

13″ wide at the top (33 cm)
18″ long (45.7 cm)
14″ wide at the waist (35.5 cm)

Age: Estimated 1950’s

Fabrics are a variety of quality and value, salvaged from other pieces: velvet, corduroy, polyester and cotton. The inside is a creamy poly blend.

Big rough stitches on the inside show where objects have been sewn on the front and back. Although the neckline and sides are turned in nicely, the bottom remains unfinished.

The last photo is a vintage one of Turkmen women, same type of metal work in their outfits.
