Bring yourself luck with these hand carved green serpentine scarab beads! Each of these beetles are slightly different, with a beautiful slight variation in color, shape and size. The carving is very dimensional, and deep cuts have been made on either end of the bead and between the legs to add depth to the beetle. The back of each bead is flat, and the hole is wide enough to accommodate a thick string. Tiny carved serpentine spacer beads are strung between each of the larger scarab beads.

Average Dimensions:

Bead Size: 3/4″ (1.8 cm) long, 1/2″ (12 mm) wide, 5/16″ (8 mm) tall
Strand Length: 9.25 inches (23 centimeters) 12 beads per strand

Please examine the photos carefully. We have made every attempt to get as close to the color as possible, but different monitors do interpret these colors differently. And, you will notice that the sizes of the beads do vary from strand to strand. Flaws, hairline cracks and uneven finishing is part of this handmade process.

From jemselect.com:

“The Egyptian scarab beetle was used as an amulet or a good luck charm by both the rich and the poor. A depiction of a scarab beetle was used in the making of various types of pendants, bracelets, rings and necklaces. Scarab jewelry was believed to hold strong magical and religious powers and the scarab was a symbol of rebirth. The name of the owner was inscribed on the flat base of the scarab to ensure that protection would be bestowed upon the wearer. Scarab pendants, bracelets, rings and necklaces were often made of precious or semi-precious jewels such as carnelian, lapis lazuli and turquoise.”

Afghan Tribal Arts specializes in handcut, unpolished beads from Afghanistan and the region. Working with artisans directly in the Peshawar region, your purchase helps support small workshops who work in traditions established over centuries in the Silk Road. Afghanistan has great wealth in its natural resources, including an endless variety of semi-precious stones. Unpolished stones take in the oils of the skin with wear and develop a deep patina over time.

Recognizing that these strands are more expensive than the dyed and commercial stones that flood the market these days, we encourage our customers to think of buying with other friends and splitting the strands or to buy quantity in order to save on shipping.
