Prairie Point Mustard Pillow #2

Description

This is a pillow made with small pieces of fabric that are folded and sewn down, going from the outer row to the center. You take a square piece of fabric, fold it twice and then fold the edges to the center and sew it down: a prairie point! A friend gave me a bunch of fabric that had been cut into samples. I don’t know what the content is, but it has a nice sheen to it. The center is a big yo-yo that has been sewed down. The mustard fabric is a thick nubby upholstery fabric. The back is thick black cotton. Insert is not included and is added through a flap closure.  16″ Square.

The last two photos show a similar pillow with the insert.  Hand wash and iron carefully.

I was at a folk art show many years ago and one of the booths had an antique prairie point doily that captured my attention. I bought it and it started a flurry of prairie point projects. See the last photo. When you fold the points back, you see the original colors, so bright and fresh! I love bringing small pieces together into a larger construction! These are not easy to make as each point has to be ironed, placed and as you go, it gets thicker and thicker….

Prairie points have been traditionally used as small edgings on quilts. It’s great fun to push the boundaries and see what else can happen with them!
